Full Length Drama
Herbert Mitgang’s “Mr. Lincoln”Rooted in Abraham Lincoln’s own writings and other historical records, this full-length one-person dramatic portrayal of approximately two hours traces the story of our sixteenth President from his impoverished boyhood to his fateful assassination at the end of the Civil War. Author Herbert Mitgang examines both the public and private life, skillfully weaving stories, paraphrases, and quotations from the brilliant language of Abraham Lincoln himself into a gripping, humorous, and totally human tale, which is inspiring, educative, and entertaining. Anguish and affability are never far apart as Mr. Lincoln reveals a man of compassion, principle, and humility.
Mr. Lincoln had its world premiere at the Citadel Theatre, Edmonton, Canada, starring British actor Roy Dotrice, and thereafter played at Hart House Theatre, Toronto. It opened in the United States at Ford’s Theatre, Washington, D.C. The play’s New York premiere was at the Morosco Theatre on Broadway. It toured in western Australia, playing at His Majesty’s Theatre, Perth, and at the Opera Theatre, Adelaide. The play opened in a fourth country, Great Britain, at the Fortune Theatre, London. Mr. Lincoln was presented as the first Hallmark Hall of Fame drama on PBS television in the United States.
Chris Small first performed the play in 1997 onstage at Andrews University. He may perform for your audience only by making special arrangement with The Lincoln Project and the Dramatic Publishing Company.
“A tour de force. . . . Witty, mournful, educative and totally believable, Small became his role and brought to vivid life Lincoln’s brilliant and tragic story.” (Reviewer Jack Stenger)
